Bios: 

Christian is a senior lecturer at the Indiana University School of Social Work and co-owner of VibeWell Connect, a telehealth company. He teaches and researchers in the areas of telebehavioral health practice, distance education, and the use of Al in social work practice and education. He utilizes e-simulations designed to enhance student clinical practice skills in a virtual setting. He is interested in enhancing e-social work distance education through program development and technology design, as well as utilizing technology-based interventions within clinical social work.

 

Jennifer Kolb, LCSW; Social Work Consultant, reviewed and determined the course meets requirements for continuing education in the field of social work. This course is appropriate for masters and clinical level social workers. Jennifer graduated with a Master’s degree in Social Work with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Louisville, Kentucky. She specializes in school-based psychotherapy with children and adolescents, as well as licensing exam coaching and preparation.

 

Course Description (Day 1): As technology transforms the healthcare landscape, telemental health has emerged as a powerful modality for reaching clients in diverse settings. This foundational training equips mental health professionals with a comprehensive understanding of telehealth service delivery. Participants will explore definitions and distinctions between various telehealth models, examine legal and ethical standards (including HIPAA compliance), and review technology options. Special emphasis is placed on intake and assessment protocols, informed consent, and establishing therapeutic rapport remotely. Designed to be practical and interactive, this day provides clinicians with critical tools and frameworks to launch or strengthen their telemental health practice confidently.

  2. Identify key components of an informed consent process specific to telemental health.
  3. Describe intake and assessment procedures adapted for virtual settings.

  5. Examine common barriers to engagement in telemental health and strategies to overcome them.
  6. Recognize ethical issues related to initiating and maintaining telehealth services.

Course Description (Day 2): This advanced training is designed for seasoned telemental health professionals seeking to deepen their expertise across clinical, ethical, legal, and technological domains. Moving beyond foundational concepts, the session equips clinicians to confidently manage high-risk situations, navigate complex multistate legal landscapes, and ethically integrate emerging technologies into practice. Through real-world case scenarios, interactive labs, and applied decision-making models, participants will gain hands-on experience in addressing nuanced dilemmas in telemental health. Special emphasis will be placed on serving diverse populations, ethical crisis response, digital boundary setting, and staying ahead of policy shifts in a post-COVID era. Participants will leave prepared to lead in the evolving digital behavioral health ecosystem.

  3. Consider and manage suicidality, dissociation, and domestic safety concerns during telehealth sessions using virtual safety protocols.
  4. Apply structured ethical decision-making models to complex, real-world dilemmas in digital settings.
  5. Analyze post-COVID policy changes impacting telehealth and translate them into compliant clinical practices.
  6. Identify key technologies (AI, VR, wearables) and evaluate their clinical relevance, risks, and ethical considerations in telemental health.
  7. Discover best practices for digital professionalism, including managing social media boundaries, asynchronous communication, and cybersecurity risks.
