How Much Do Social Workers Make?

The median annual salary for social workers in the United States is around $50,390, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.  However, the exact salary can vary depending on factors such as the social worker's level of education, years of experience, and geographical location.

To become a social worker, one must first earn a bachelor's degree in social work (BSW) or a related field such as psychology, sociology, or human service, gain experience through internships, volunteer work, or paid work in social service agencies.  A graduate degree may often be required for advanced practice and leadership positions.  State licensure must also be obtained.  The licensure process typically involves passing an exam and meeting other requirements such as a background check and continuing education courses.
