Continuing education activities must meet specific standards to count toward your BCBA CEU requirements. The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) defines acceptable CEU activities as those that advance your professional skills, knowledge, and ethical understanding in applied behavior analysis.

Here are common types of approved CEU activities:

The BACB recognizes three main ways you can earn CEUs: Learning, Teaching, and Scholarship. Each type is designed to help you strengthen and expand your behavior-analytic skills.

Learning

  • Attending live or recorded webinars and workshops offered by BACB Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) Providers
  • Participating in conferences and symposiums with ABA-relevant sessions
  • Completing approved graduate-level coursework in behavior analysis
  • Engaging in certain BACB certification activities (these are added directly to your BACB account)

Teaching

  • Leading a session for an ACE Provider event
  • Teaching university-level behavior analysis courses at an accredited institution

Scholarship

  • Publishing articles on behavior analysis in peer-reviewed journals (8 CEUs per publication)
  • Writing review or decision letters for peer-reviewed journal submissions (1 CEU per letter)

To be approved, these activities typically must include a verification process, such as attendance tracking or a certificate of completion. The BACB expects that CEUs relate directly to the professional development of behavior analysts and avoid content outside the scope of ABA.

Some providers like AATBS also offer CEUs in specialized areas like trauma-informed care, cultural competency, or organizational behavior management. These options allow BCBAs to tailor their continuing education to their specific practice areas or interests.

It’s important to keep records of your completed CEUs for the recertification audit process.
