Continuing Education Units (CEUs) come in various types, each designed to support different aspects of professional development for behavior analysts. Understanding these types is key to planning your CE strategy to fulfill the BACB’s recertification requirements efficiently.

First, Ethics CEUs are important. All BCBAs and BCaBAs must complete a set number of CEUs in ethics every recertification cycle. These courses focus on professional conduct, ethical decision-making, and the BACB’s Professional and Ethical Compliance Code. Ethics training helps ensure your practice meets legal and moral standards, which benefits both clients and professionals. BCBAs are required to obtain 4 CEUs in ethics within each 2-year recertification cycle.

Next are Supervision CEUs, which apply specifically to BCBAs who supervise trainees or assistants. These CEUs provide training on effective supervision techniques, feedback delivery, and developing supervisee skills. Even if you don’t currently supervise, staying familiar with supervision best practices prepares you for future roles. BCBAs are required to obtain 3 CEUs in ethics within each 2-year recertification cycle.

The third category is General CEUs, covering a wide range of ABA-related topics. This can include assessment methods, intervention strategies, research updates, or emerging trends like telehealth. These CEUs allow behavior analysts to broaden and deepen their knowledge in areas relevant to their work. BCBAs are required to obtain 32 total continuing education units within each 2-year recertification cycle.

CEUs also vary by format:

  • Live CEUs come from attending real-time events such as webinars, workshops, or conferences. They often include opportunities for interaction, Q&A, and networking.
  • On-Demand CEUs are pre-recorded courses that let you learn on your schedule. This flexibility is especially helpful for professionals with busy or unpredictable hours.

Knowing these CEU types and how they fit your certification requirements helps you create a balanced continuing education plan. It ensures you meet all necessary categories and stay current in your practice with the most impactful learning experiences.
