Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) are required to earn continuing education units (CEUs) during each two-year certification cycle to maintain their credentials. These CEUs help behavior analysts stay up to date with best practices, emerging research, and changes to professional guidelines.

Here’s how the CEU requirements break down:

For BCBAs:

  • 32 CEUs total
  • 4 CEUs must be in ethics

CEUs must come from events, courses, or workshops that meet the standards set by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). This includes live and on-demand content, provided it aligns with the BACB’s continuing education guidelines.

Many professionals choose to complete their CEUs through online CE courses, which offer flexibility and access to topics that directly support their day-to-day practice. Supervision CEUs, ethics training, and specialty topics like trauma-informed care or advanced assessment strategies are among the most popular areas of focus.

To avoid any last-minute stress, it’s a good idea to keep track of completed CEUs throughout your certification cycle and make sure you’re covering the correct categories. The BACB also requires documentation of CEUs during the recertification process, so save proof of completion for every course or activity.

For up-to-date details, always refer to the BACB’s Handbook.
